## ✅ What's Been Implemented

A comprehensive webhook handling system that automatically manages your business subscription lifecycle through Stripe events.

---

## 📊 Database Changes

### New Company Fields:
```php
// companies table
- subscription_status (ENUM): 'active', 'inactive', 'past_due', 'trialing', 'cancelled'
- subscription_ends_at (TIMESTAMP): nullable
```

**Migration:** `2026_02_08_083030_add_subscription_status_to_companies_table.php`

---

## 🎯 Webhook Events & Business Logic

### 1. **checkout.session.completed** → `handleCheckoutSessionCompleted()`

**Trigger:** User completes payment in Stripe Checkout

**Business Logic:**
- ✅ Activates company subscription status
- ✅ Sets subscription_ends_at to null (will be updated by subscription webhooks)
- ✅ Logs successful activation
- 📧 Can send welcome email (commented out)

**Example Response:**
```php
if ($user->company) {
    $user->company->update([
        'subscription_status' => 'active',
        'subscription_ends_at' => null,
    ]);
}
```

---

### 2. **customer.subscription.created** → `handleSubscriptionCreated()`

**Trigger:** New subscription created in Stripe

**Business Logic:**
- ✅ Syncs subscription from Stripe to database (handled by Cashier)
- ✅ Updates company status based on subscription status
- ✅ Stores subscription end date
- 📧 Can send welcome notification

**Status Handling:**
```php
if ($subscription->status === 'active') {
    // Set company to active
    $user->company->update([
        'subscription_status' => 'active',
        'subscription_ends_at' => Carbon::createFromTimestamp($subscription->current_period_end),
    ]);
} elseif ($subscription->status === 'trialing') {
    // Set company to trialing
    $user->company->update([
        'subscription_status' => 'trialing',
        'subscription_ends_at' => Carbon::createFromTimestamp($subscription->trial_end),
    ]);
}
```

---

### 3. **customer.subscription.updated** → `handleSubscriptionUpdated()`

**Trigger:** Subscription details changed in Stripe

**Business Logic:** Handles ALL subscription status changes

#### **Status: `active`**
```php
$user->company->update([
    'subscription_status' => 'active',
    'subscription_ends_at' => Carbon::createFromTimestamp($subscription->current_period_end),
]);
```
- ✅ Company is fully active
- ✅ All features unlocked

#### **Status: `trialing`**
```php
$user->company->update([
    'subscription_status' => 'trialing',
    'subscription_ends_at' => Carbon::createFromTimestamp($subscription->trial_end),
]);
```
- ✅ Company active on trial
- 📧 Should send trial ending reminder

#### **Status: `past_due`**
```php
$user->company->update([
    'subscription_status' => 'past_due',
]);
```
- ⚠️ Payment failed but still in grace period
- ⏰ Stripe will retry payment (3-4 attempts)
- 📧 Should send payment update notification
- ❌ Features still active during grace period

#### **Status: `canceled` or `incomplete_expired`**
```php
$user->company->update([
    'subscription_status' => 'cancelled',
    'subscription_ends_at' => now(),
]);
```
- ❌ Company deactivated
- 📧 Send cancellation confirmation
- 💾 Keep data for X days (your choice)

#### **Status: `incomplete`**
```php
Log::warning('Subscription creation incomplete', ['user_id' => $user->id]);
```
- ⚠️ Initial payment failed
- 📧 Send payment method update request

---

### 4. **customer.subscription.deleted** → `handleSubscriptionDeleted()`

**Trigger:** Subscription permanently deleted from Stripe

**Business Logic:**
```php
if ($user->company) {
    $user->company->update([
        'subscription_status' => 'inactive',
        'subscription_ends_at' => now(),
    ]);
}
```
- ❌ Company immediately deactivated
- 💾 Data retained (soft delete or archive)
- 📧 Send subscription ended email
- 🔄 Option: Downgrade to free tier

---

### 5. **invoice.paid** → `handleInvoicePaid()`

**Trigger:** Successful recurring payment

**Business Logic:**
- ✅ Reactivates company if it was inactive
- 💾 Can store payment record (need payments table)
- 📧 Send payment confirmation
- 📊 Update revenue analytics

**Example:**
```php
// Amount converted from cents
$amount = $invoice->amount_paid / 100;
// Reactivate company
if ($user->company && $user->company->subscription_status !== 'active') {
    $user->company->update([
        'subscription_status' => 'active',
        'subscription_ends_at' => null,
    ]);
}
// Store payment (optional - requires payments table)
Payment::create([
    'user_id' => $user->id,
    'stripe_invoice_id' => $invoice->id,
    'amount' => $amount,
    'currency' => $invoice->currency,
    'status' => 'paid',
    'paid_at' => now(),
]);
```

---

### 6. **invoice.payment_failed** → `handleInvoicePaymentFailed()`

**Trigger:** Payment attempt failed

**Business Logic:**
- ⚠️ Logs failure with details
- 📧 Send payment failed notification
- 📊 Track failed attempts
- ⏰ Wait for Stripe retry (automatic)

**Example:**
```php
$failedAttempts = $subscription->invoice_failed_attempts ?? 0;
// Send notification
$user->notify(new PaymentFailedNotification([
    'amount' => $invoice->amount_due / 100,
    'retry_date' => $subscription->next_action->retry_after,
    'failed_attempts' => $failedAttempts + 1,
]));
// Optional: Downgrade features after multiple failures
if ($failedAttempts >= 2) {
    // Downgrade to limited features
    $user->company->update(['subscription_tier' => 'free_past_due']);
}
```

---

### 7. **invoice.upcoming** → `handleInvoiceUpcoming()`

**Trigger:** ~1 week before next billing date

**Business Logic:**
- 📧 Send renewal reminder
- 💳 Reminder to update payment method
- 💰 Show upcoming charge amount

**Example:**
```php
$user->notify(new UpcomingRenewalNotification([
    'amount' => $invoice->amount_due / 100,
    'currency' => $invoice->currency,
    'next_payment_date' => $subscription->current_period_end,
]));
```

---

## 🔄 Subscription Lifecycle Flow

```
1. User Subscribes
   ↓
   checkout.session.completed → Company set to 'active'
   ↓
   customer.subscription.created → Company updated with end date
   ↓
2. Active Period
   ↓
   invoice.upcoming (7 days before) → Send reminder
   ↓
   invoice.paid → Company stays 'active'
   ↓
3. Payment Fails
   ↓
   invoice.payment_failed → Company set to 'past_due'
   ↓
   Stripe retries payment (up to 4 times)
   ↓
4. All Retries Failed
   ↓
   customer.subscription.updated (status='canceled')
   ↓
   Company set to 'cancelled' + subscription_ends_at = now()
   ↓
   customer.subscription.deleted
   ↓
   Company set to 'inactive'
```

---

## 🎛️ How to Use in Your Application

### Check if Company is Active:
```php
if (auth()->user()->company && auth()->user()->company->subscription_status === 'active') {
    // Grant premium features
}
```

### Check if Subscription is Expiring Soon:
```php
$company = auth()->user()->company;
if ($company->subscription_ends_at && $company->subscription_ends_at->diffInDays() <= 7) {
    // Show renewal warning
}
```

### Check Grace Period:
```php
if ($company->subscription_status === 'past_due') {
    // Show "Update payment method" message
    // Features still work during grace period
}
```

### Middleware to Protect Premium Features:
```php
public function handle($request, Closure $next)
{
    $user = auth()->user();
    if (!$user->company || $user->company->subscription_status !== 'active') {
        return response()->json(['error' => 'Premium subscription required'], 403);
    }
    return $next($request);
}
```

---

## 📧 Email Notifications (To Implement)

Create these notification classes:

### 1. `SubscriptionStartedNotification`
```php
// Sent when user first subscribes
// Welcome email + plan details
```

### 2. `PaymentSuccessfulNotification`
```php
// Sent when payment is successful
// Receipt + amount charged
```

### 3. `PaymentFailedNotification`
```php
// Sent when payment fails
// Link to update payment method
```

### 4. `SubscriptionCancelledNotification`
```php
// Sent when subscription is cancelled
// Confirmation + data retention policy
```

### 5. `UpcomingRenewalNotification`
```php
// Sent 7 days before renewal
// Reminder + upcoming charge amount
```

### 6. `SubscriptionWillEndNotification`
```php
// Sent when user schedules cancellation
// Warning that subscription will end
```

---

## 🗄️ Optional: Create Payments Table

To track payment history, create this migration:

```php
Schema::create('payments', function (Blueprint $table) {
    $table->id();
    $table->foreignId('user_id');
    $table->string('stripe_invoice_id')->unique();
    $table->decimal('amount', 10, 2);
    $table->string('currency', 3);
    $table->string('status'); // paid, failed, pending
    $table->timestamp('paid_at')->nullable();
    $table->timestamps();
});
```

---

## 🧪 Testing

### Test Webhooks Locally:
```bash
# Install Stripe CLI
brew install stripe/stripe-cli/stripe
# Login
stripe login
# Forward webhooks to localhost
stripe listen --forward-to localhost/api/v1/stripe/webhook
# Trigger test events
stripe trigger checkout.session.completed
stripe trigger customer.subscription.created
stripe trigger invoice.paid
stripe trigger invoice.payment_failed
```

### Check Logs:
```bash
tail -f storage/logs/laravel.log | grep "Subscription"
```

---
